German born and classically trained sculptor Elisabet Ney immigrated to the United States in 1871.  In her never-ending search for a utopian environment, she moved to Austin in 1892 and began construction of this beautiful castle on the banks of Waller Creek, on the fringe of today’s Hyde Park.  She slept outside in a tent filled with oriental carpets and her silver tea set, and sculpted by day in the house.

This beautiful museum in a pastoral park-like setting is filled with the treasures of her work; a must see for anyone living in or visiting Austin.

“I built my soul a lordly pleasure house
wherein at ease for aye to dwell.
I said, “O Soul, make merry and carouse
Dear Soul, for all is well.”
