Restoration on the Prairie

During our first visit, we were taken with a sense of place and spirit.  Serene, peaceful, and protected by a grove of grand old oak trees, the house was imposing in scale and proportion, and retained most of its vernacular detailing.  The tree-filtered light in the rooms was magical.  Sadly, many of its significant architectural details had been compromised over time.  However, enough vernacular elements remained intact to reveal the house's original character and design intent.

Key Design Issues

This endeavor represents a long-distance collaboration with our clients, driven by our client's connection to her family home.  Her goals guided the Program:

  1. Stabilize the historic structure,

  2. Restore the historic house as friendly livable home,

  3. Design compatible additions to the property, including a master suite, space for gatherings, pool house, outdoor kitchen, and separate guest complex,

  4. Preserve the ancient oaks and the historic family cemetery on the property, and

  5. Create a furnishings and finishes plan and acquire period-appropriate furnishings and accessories for the historic home.
